I recently bought (last year) a 2006 Monterey Explorer 263 with a Volvo Penta 350 and duo prop. Multiple people have commented that the shifter is hard to shift into gear and hard to get back into neutral (the button does not want to pop out). At times went from forward to reverse without it stopping in neutral.
One issue that has persisted is when I go from a cold start and go a short distance in a no wake zone then try to go full throttle to get on plane, most times the engine starts to backfire, doesn't seem to rev or go into gear. I have to get it back into neutral then it seems to work. Occasionally it has stalled in the no wake zone also.
Have done a number of repairs and replaced a few sensors (no error codes register). Not sure if the two above issues are related even though they both seem to involve the shifter. I have not replaced the shifter or cable yet but tired of blindly trying things by the mechanic. Hoping someone may have a better idea of a possible solution.
Any help or thoughts are appreciated.
