Shift interrupter switch

140 go mercruiser 1986 the shift interrupter ohms out if push in will kill boat when running but I saw a video where to test see if working put test light on coil an ground to battery when you manual push shift interrupter it kills test light but why would mine not do that

It's supposed to kill the motor, when held in,....

I understand that but video I watched way guy tested it by hand was put test light on it pushed it in killed test light mine will not do that
that’s link I watched go near end of video see what I mean

Yeah, got that. What do you have for an ignition? But again, why do you care?

Why do you say why do I care I’m just trying to figure problem out is all was just looking for help
I say why do you care because it sounds as if the switch is working. So with points, either your switch is not actually working (but you say it kills the engine), it doesn't ohm out when closed (you say it does), or you're testing it wrong (is the test light connected to negative on coil? is it lighting up and not going out or is it not lighting up?)

I say why do you care because it sounds as if the switch is working. So with points, either your switch is not actually working (but you say it kills the engine), it doesn't ohm out when closed (you say it does), or you're testing it wrong (is the test light connected to negative on coil? is it lighting up and not going out or is it not lighting up?)
It ohms out when closed . I had test light on positive side of coil with key on accessory test light was light but not going out when activated switch by hand my issue is hard get out of gear I have new lower shift cable adjusted to spec but if cut motor off in gear take out of get start boat back up fine but not safe to me so I’m trying to make it right not good In crowded areas any input will help thanks a lot

Ayuh,..... Yer switch should go to ground when pushed in, to ground out the points, killing the spark,.....

Needs to be on the negative side of the coil, points need to be closed. When you're coming out of gear, check to see that the shift plate is moving. When motor running, push on the shift plate and see if the motor is killed. Sometimes the plate can bind, and the switch lever may also need to be adjusted.

Ok so I could start it on muffs an move shift plate an should work correct ?

Also how would

One more question how would test light be on if it’s on negative side of coil I got be missing something here I thank you all for the help

yes on muffs. I should have said points open. When open, there's no current and no voltage drop across the coil.

Ok when get off work today going have pull cap off see what points are doing also first going fire up on muffs a see if works when rotating shift interrupter back an forth

Defective or not wired correctly... U shifting fast???? Set 700 rps in the water, not on land and hooked up to a hose.
