Re: 1981 Sea King 3.5hp outboard, mounted on 21' sailboat...
I'm a bit stumped here, in all the manuals and such I see references to "EP Gear Oil" to use in the lower outboard gear area. I'm useto the automotive world with GL-4 / GL-5 gear oils, etc...so is this oil a totally different oil, or just some generic specification? From reading online it would appear any quality GL-4/5 oil would work (i.e. I see people mentioning they are putting in such and such of oil, which is a GL-5 oil...). I'm specifically asking about Red Line gear oils, as I use them in all my vehicles and have plenty around, MT-90 in my manual trannies and their normal 75-90 gear oil in diffs (all are full syn), I believe both actually meet GL-4/5 specs and from all the tests I've seen (once again in the automotive world) are excellent oils.
So, can I just use one of my Red Line oils, or do I need to buy something actually sold as "EP Gear Oil" ? (The EP just means Extreme Pressure right?, which seems a bit vague to me, not an actual spec). The EP oils I have seen appear to be nothing more than a cheap dino gear oil that's being marketed for the marine world...but maybe I'm wrong on that.
Any help would be appreciated...
Thanks,
Mark
