Scale on lower unit

Just traded a 9.9 merc about a 97. Lower unit is black as it should be but what shouldn't be is hard scale, a lime like deposit. The guy that had it left it setting with lower unit down all the time. (fresh water). What would be good to clean it off and leave the paint.

A mild acid like vinegar or solution marketed for descaling humidifiers. Don't imerse the housing, just use a rag or sponge on the scale.

"Lime Away" does wonders and will not hurt the paint...
