I have a 1995 350 Mag that seems to have a lot of exhuast fumes lately. The transom is covered with black stains after it is run for a day. The motor seems to be running fine otherwise. Any suggestions?

I had the same issue with my 3ltr omc.I cleaned out the spark arresster on top of the carb with brake clean.I could not believe the crap that came out.I definitely helped the running rich thing with my boat.

I think that one could have 3 different carbs .......Check your automatic choke. It's probably sticking.

In the summer time, I disconnect my auto-choke and I never have that problem. I'm not suggesting you do that but you could temporarily disconnect it and wire it open and see if you're still running rich.

Otherwise, it sounds like you may need to rebuild/replace your carb.

Cheers,

Plugs are black. It's has a Weber Carb, I was reading that Weber's have three setting for the accelerator pump and they are set to run rich from the factory.

Unless the accelerator pump is leaking continuously it's unlikely that it's causing you to run really rich.

I would bet that it's your automatic choke. Try backing it off or wiring it open so it doesn't work at all and see what happens.

You could also try the different settings on the accelerator pump. if you get it too lean it will probably hesitate or "bog" when you open the throttle from idle.

More then likely it is rich at idle, Look at the plugs are they rich? More then likely the fuel flotes are out off aujustment or you have some fuel soked flotes on the inside and it lowerd the flotes and raised the fuel level making it run rich. aka to much fuel in the fuel flote bowls. It happends a lot to that carb.:(

Ran boat last weekend and choke is operating fine. Must be internal, maybe soaked floats?

Running and starting doesn't mean the choke is correct. You need to measure it and compare it to the specs in the manual.

Then set it to open just a little more....

I'll check the book, but it appears to be wide open. This is after the engine was at normal operating temps.

Re: Running Rich?

I am having a the same type problem on my 1996 Mercruiser 35o mag.

Thought it was bad fuel at first ---- At high speeds my motor sounds AWESOME but at lower speeds (like 10 mph during wakesurfing) it sounds "heavy" and tends to bogg down when idling and will even cut off during a idle....

If it is running rich can I adjust this myself??? I am decent mechanically -- but I unfamilar with this type of adjustment --- any help would be great.
