I have a 1988 Sun Runner 22.5, it has a cheny 5.0 liter V-8 coupled to a volvo penta model 275 sterndrive (sp). When I move the throttle from neutral to reverse then to nuetral and then to forward gear the engagement is rough (bang). But it I take it out of forward gear back into neutral then back to forward the transition is smooth. The hard shift only occurs when I move throttle from reverse to neutral to forward. Anybody ever had a similiar problem or is this normal?

Re: Rough Engagement

sounds like your reverse lock is not holding the drive down when in rev. then when you shift to forward it slams the drive down . i assume you have tilt only on this drive . if you have the boat out of the water you can check the rev lock by putting the drive in rev then try to lift the drive by hand .grab the drive with both hands by the exhaust outlet/trim tab and jerk it upwards if it comes up the rev lock isn't holding and the link rod hole needs to be reamed out so the link rod will move up and down smoothly.[ make sure that the light is out on the dash for the tilt and also verify that the tilt ram is fully retracted]

Re: Rough Engagement

John, I did notice that when I lift the outdrive out of the water and then lower it back down around 3/4 of the way down I can hear the outdrive slam the rest of the way, this is still while holding the tilt button down. As far as the light goes when I got the boat the tilt light was always on as soon as I started the boat,(I assume somethings wrong). My throttle handle has a switch on the left for trim and on the right for tilt, this is coupled with a mechanical motor in the stern, however only the trim side of the switch is connected, the other wires I noticed under the dash are disconnected, (for what reason I don't know).Any ideas?

Re: Rough Engagement

i am assuming that you have tilt only since there is a light on the dash for the tilt.if the light won't go out, it is possible that the tilt shaft isn't retracting all of the way which is a common problem on these units. the tilt shaft has to retract fully for the light to go out and so that the rev. lock linkage can work properly.you need to have the boat out of the water and take a good look at the tilt shaft and the rev.lock linkage at this point.
