Looking to go to Rice Lake, Ontario Canada this year. Have not been there in 20 years. Stayed at Southview Cottages. Is fishing for bass and walleye still good there?

Southview has gone up in price so is there any recomendation on a decent place near it? Just a little familiar with that area is why I suggest around that spot. Open for ideas.

I plan to fish so I can eat it daily and enough to bring some home. Pan fish are good too. We will tube and pleasure boat too.

I thik you'll do O.K. with pan fish, Bass and walleye not so great anymore. One thing you may want to do if you have a boat and a little time is cruise part of the trent severn .

Jim

Like most of the lakes within a 2hr drive of Toronto, fishing has become sporadic. However I have still had many days where I can limit out within 4-6 hours. Not sure what the lake was like 20yrs ago but the lake is choked full of weeds in many places now. A weedless trolling prop is a must have. Most walleye are in the 1-3 Ib range. Perch are plentiful but small and crappie have become abundant. I don't go after bass so can't comment there. Here is a good starting point for you.

http://www.fishontario.com/best-spots/rice/ricehome.html

As cuzner pointed out, a trip along the trent severn waterway is well worth it. Approx 30Km (18 miles) up the Otonabee river is the town of Peterborough and the highest hydraulic liftlock in the world at 65ft. Quite an experience to travel through it.

One more important thing. Anyone over 18yrs old will need a license to fish. Prices run from $24.00 for a 7 day conservation license (2/day possession limit) to $40.00 for a 7 day sport fishing license (6/day possession limit) for that area. Check this website for full details. If caught without a license the fines can be steep and you could possibly have your gear confiscated.

http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/MNR/pubs/pubmenu.html

Here are some decent accomodations. I own a cottage about a 10 minute walk away.

http://terracelawn.ca/

You would be located 1 lock out of rice lake with about 20 miles of lock free boating.

Fishing is actually quite good. Last year was a very bad year though. Hoping this year is better.

It is weedy but there is still lots of open water for weed line fishing or skiing tubing etc.

10 minutes from a small town(Havelock) and about 15 minutes from a larger town with decent restaraunts, shopping etc.

Tx.

Joe
