I am looking at a job position in the Rhinelander, WI area. I am wondering what the boating season is like up there. I am from Illinois and have always thought that it's just COLD that far north...all the time. I see from the weather.com that the average july/aug high temps are 78 vs 86 in IL. Anyone with input on the boating season would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Rhinelander, WI

LOVE that area! Watch out for the Hodags! ;) :)

My Grandparents had (Uncle has it now) a cabin in Three Lakes - about 20 minutes NE of Rhinelander. BEAUTIFUL country. IMHO some of the best boating area in WI is the Eagle River / Three Lakes chain of 28 lakes. Also I lived in Antigo for a while - about a half hour SE of Rhinelander.

You are about in the middle of IL? If you take your summer season and take away 2 weeks on each end you will be just about right. The summer season up here is Mem. day thru Labor day, but most of June is pretty slow. Most of summer is enjoyed July 4 weekend - Labor day. If your boating activities include fishing you'll love Rhinelander. Also within 45 minutes drive is 3 for sure, possibly 4 free water ski shows put on by local ski clubs in Crandon, Three Lakes and Eagle River. That is always fun, and the shows are first class!

For winter, Rhinelander has much more snow than my area (about 40 miles N of Madison). We have only about 3-4 good snowfalls a winter (that's how much I use my snowblower) and the rest of the time the ground is bare. Not so with Rhinelander area. There is about 4 to 8 inches on the ground all winter (minimum) due to the Lake effect snow. Great if you snowmobile! Most snowmobiles around here sit all winter unless you can take them up north.

Oh! The hodag is a mythical beast that the railroad people came up with in the late 1800's in Rhinelander. It is the town mascot and everything up there is hodag this or that.

Ask away if you have any more ?'s.

Jeff
