Can someone tell me the proper way to rewind the steering cable.

I replaced my engine and attempted to rewind it but I find that when I turn the wheel all the way to one end or the other the cable slides along the drum. How do I avoid this?

Howdy, Rookie.

You need to supply more information.

I will move this to Boats, where you should get more response.

Good luck. :)

Re: Rewinding Steering Cable

This is how I attempted to rewind the cable.

I hooked up one of the pulley ends to the motor and left the other unhooked. I then wrapped the cable around the steering wheel drum as tight as I could (I started wrapping in the middle of the drum). Then I kept tension on the cable until I could hook up the second pully end. This seemed to work, I would turn the wheel and the motor would respond. However when I get to the end of one direction the wrapped cable spins up/down the drum (depending on the turning direction of the wheel) until it gets to the edge of the drum where it stops and I can't turn it no more. How do I get the cable to lock once it reaches the end?

Re: Rewinding Steering Cable

You probably do not have enough wraps around the drum. The oldpully and cable outfits are dangerous, and should be replaced with a modern push pull outfit. :D :D

I have found a diagram on how to wrap the cable properly so that it locks.

web page
