I drained lower unit & discovered some light brown oil. Put a vacuum & 5# pressure test on the unit, and it flunked. I sprayed soap & water on all drain & vent plugs and the propeller shaft seals and no bubbles. This leaves me with interior seals.
As I never have worked on a outboard motor (115hp '01 Mercury 2 stroke), I am questioning myself if it is something I should tackle or leave to the pros. The water pump repair kit with seals and the lower unit seal kit will run a little over $200. for parts, but will I need to purchase any special tools to complete the job? The motor repair place said less then $400. to do the hold job.
So my question to this membership is, should I take this on for experience because it's not that difficult, or let the pros have it?
