Repowered motor really keeps same serial number?

Buying a boat which had its 9 year old engine replaced this year by a dealer, previous engine overheated and blew. Looks very clean. Told engine is (and was) V-P 5.0gi, 250HP. (Engine in compartment has a big plastic piece on top that says "Volvo Penta 5.0gi".) Boat gorgeous otherwise.

Dealers says new motor has two year warranty, new block, heads, cams, etc. everything except intake manifolds/carbureution (may have intended to say injection); outdrive is original.

Dealer says the new motor is technically still the same year as the old engine because they kept the valve covers from the old engine, so the serial number is still the same.

Huh? Does a new V-P motor not really have its own new serial number?

Or does this mean that this is a crate motor that doesnt have its own serial number?

Or that they merely bought a generic bunch of parts to replace what broke, rebuilt, not new?

Any advice or recommendations welcome.

(PS What does a new crate VP 5.0 or 5.7 go for, roughly, if anyone knows).

New Volvo long blocks come with their own SN and should have a metal tag on the port side of the block. Did you ASK for an OEM long block?
Do you have the SN of the old engine handy?

Re: Repowered motor really keeps same serial number?

The new engine was in when I first saw the boat.

What would the original number tell you?

Did some more Googling ... Guessing now that the 2yr warranty means that this is a reman unit, not a real V-P unit, which would have a 7 yr warranty. So there's no new V-P serial number at all. When they said "Volvo 5.0L" they meant "Volvo-style 5.0L".

Is this engine likely to last? Would it be hard to find parts for?

If the original engine had to be replaced due to overheating, is the SX outdrive suspect?

No one on this forum can tell you what that dealer install or didn't install.
We can't see, feel, hear, your engine, or talk to the dealer. Trust me, we also don't have crystal balls to see all and know all.
You have a Chevy engine, the engines are bought by Volvo from GM. Where your "New" block came from, who knows.

If no current problems . . . why worry? A basic short block is a basic short block. If assembled to tolerances and set up properly I don't see any difference if it is a new engine from Volvo or GM or a rebuild from Jasper.

I used a local machinist to rebuild mine and I would trust it every bit as much as a new GM motor from the factory and a bit more too.

As to the tag on the valve cover being the same-it means nothing or less than nothing.

I don't mean to slam remans or any of the fine advertisers on this site. When its time to move up, I would go from a 305 to a 350 via reman.

The dealer's ad said "Volvo 5.0", the purchase agreement said "Volvo 250hp" with the old Volvo serial number.

The J E&T specs said 210-230 hp, and is used for both Merc and Volvo apps.. Volvo said 250hp. Are the compressions all identical?

On top of that, it appears that while the orginal was TBI, now its carbureted. Wasn't really looking to lose HP.
