Repair Y Pipe Possible?

Well, I may have gotten screwed over by an EBay seller. Waiting to see if I can get my money back on a Y pipe that was supposed to be in excellent shape. I received the part and it has heavy corrosion almost through in one spot right behind one of the lower mounting ears. The other lower mounting ear is gone and the one that is there is so corroded it won't stand up. The picture in the ad shows all four ears in place and in such a way as to not show the corrosion. So, I don't know if it was bait and switch or shipping damage for the missing ear. Packaging was really poor and it is clearly not in excellent shape.

So, is it possible to have the area machined away and new mounting ears welded onto it? This would be a last resort if I don't get my money back (about $250) and if the fix is cost effective.

If there is that much corrosion and it wasn't evidenced in pics or description you will get your money back, just need to give seller a chance to respond and make good.

Personally for the amount of work required to replace down the road I wouldn't mess with trying to fix this.

That thing is nowhere near excellent shape. I hope you can get your money back. If it were me, I'd be getting Paypal or my credit card company involved pretty soon...

You have definitely been deceived and you should get your money back without any arguments. This Y pipe looks just like mine, pretty rotten. But I did restore mine. Take a look at my post "Restoring my Y pipe" It will help you decide what to do in case you get stuck with this thing.

Thanks for the info and the link. I opened a return on EBay and provided the pictures but haven't heard anything. EBay says they won't help until after 11/20. I paid for the pipe on PayPal and had to pay the shipping separately on PayPal. Shipping cost is another story. Will give it a few more days and then file further complaints with EBay and PayPal.

They can be repaired by a PRO TIG welder but not by an average DIY welder like me. To much salt is embedded in pipe that would be very difficult to clean and not be cost effective. I have never had an issue on an Ebay return, yet.

No way that I have the DIY skills either so need to have a Pro do it or find a new one. I have not heard anything from the seller on EBay even though having sent messages, sent pictures and filed a return request.

I once had this on Ebay with a non responsive seller, Ebay had to wait 'X" days before they got involved but eventually I got reimbursed, just a bit of a pain.

My experience lately is that sellers are not being responsive even if you are asking questions about what they are selling and the descriptions tend to be much better than the actual condition. Today is the day that I can get EBay involved so just sent them the request. I have never had to go to this step before. Supposedly they have a money back guarantee for parts not per description or arriving damaged so will see.

I have only had one issue not getting my money back for parts not as described and it was for a set of props that had been repaired poorly. Ebay got involved and refunded my money. Seller was not happy about it.

I have found the same bottom line Ebay wants folks to get what they pay for and use the platform. 99% of what i have bought off ebay is as advertised

I bought a lot of used freshwater Cobra spares on eBay and for the most part the parts were in good shape given the age of these parts and the fact that this stuff is just not available new. I have a brand new looking Y pipe, steering actuator, trim pump, spare outdrive and transom mount. Plus a lot of other odds and ends to keep the Cobra going.

I have had better luck searching CL than buying on ebay.

These days, Facebook Marketplace is way better than CL.

That's where I bought my 2017 R5 Cobalt earlier this year.

I don't even bother selling on CL anymore...the scammers just come out of the woodwork.

I got a response from the seller saying he didn't understand why EBay hadn't refunded me yet as he said they approved it due to damage. I also got a message from EBay saying they sent the seller a final notice. Unfortunately, the $70 I paid him to ship it due to a mix up in the EBay offer process was done just through PayPal so I may have to file a separate claim for that.

The shipping mix up was that he had it priced at $200 and free shipping. I offerred $175 and he accepted. However, he had put a note in the counter acceptance that I would have to pay shipping and I didn't see it due to the small print in the comments section on EBay. My bad on that one. So instead of getting it for $200 free shipping, I ended up paying $175 plus $70 for shipping. That is one bad thing about the EBay offer process as it doesn't have a way to handle offers in the shipping cost without going outside their system.
