Remote to tiller change, '05 Johnson 40hp?

My friend has a 2005, 40hp Johnson 2-stroke. Power trim and tilt, 20inch shaft. (J40PLSO) I would like to take this motor and put it on the back of my 16' Crestliner tin boat. I would need to convert this engine to tiller steer. Is there a kit for this? If so where can I get one? Could I do the coversion myself or is it a dealer job? I assume that the tiller arm would have tilt control, ignition switch, gear shift, throttle, and emergency cut off. Sounds like a big job. A BRP model list shows this engine with a 4/12 amp alt. What does this mean? It charges between 4 and 12 amps?

If I can make it tiller drive, I need to bolt it to the Crestliner. Can I do this myself? 187 lbs. I assume it doesn't just hang on the back like my current 25hp.

Thanks for the help,
John

check with dealer on parts, yes you can bolt on yourself. it only has enough charge system to maintain starting battery.

My current Cabela AGM battery is not to be charged with a charger that's over 10 amps. Will this engine damage that battery, do I need to change it?

Has anyone done a tiller conversion?

Thanks, John

The tiller conversion is easy, try to find a used one for your model with everything, a new kit may be a little pricy. Most tiller handles will fit, but the throttle cable won't fit every motor the handle will.

Johnson tiller handle complete before tax: $873
I guess I'll wait for an older 40 that's already a tiller.
What's the best source for used tiller outboards?

Thanks, John

you ask the right question, and get the right answers, and i've had no problems on ebay. i've bought several motors on ebay. all ways pay with PayPal, if they won't agree to paypal, i won't buy.
