Remote control of a trolling motor

I have a inflatable Outcast pontoon boat with a Minn Kota 30 electric trolling motor.

What I would like to do is put a On-Off-MOM On switch (see link below) on the arm of the swivel seat, so that I can control the motor without turning around and using the tiller control. I mainly want this feature for controled drift fishing and would be using the lowest speed. I want the momentary position so I can bump the motor up when needed, and the On for use when I use the tiller. Steering is not a problem, as I have adapted the oars to be used as a rudder system.

The switch I am looking at is Cole Hersee Heavy Duty Toggle Switch - 3 Screw Term. On-Off-Mom. On (Rated 25-Ampere)http://www.iboats.com/3_Screw_Term_...18017195--**********.866341362--view_id.65038

Is this conversion possible, and would I wire it into my battery cable that goes from the motor to the battery? The switch has 3 terminals..

Thanks,

Yes - what you want to do is possible but the switch you selected does not provide the "momentary" function. Momentary means the switch is spring loaded in that position and operates the motor only when "held". On is simply moving the switch to the ON position and it stays there until turned off. I'm not aware of any switches like the one you show that has a positive ON in one position and spring loaded in the other. You really don't need the momentary function and can use a simple two position ON-OFF switch. ON is on and the motor runs as long as its on. Momentary is ON until you turn it off. The only other choice is to use two switches. One two position on-off and a momentary on-off (push button). In your application, I really don't see the need for the momentary function.

Thanks for the info silvertip. I guess I was making a easy job more difficult than it appeared. I will probably use a simple off-on switch as you suggested. What would your choice be, as I want something durable and able to handle the load?

Splat, thanks for the foot control idea, but with this type of setup,

a foot control would not be practical..

Mount the foot control at the seat. It is a high current switch and has the momentary/continuous function you are after. And it is inexpensive.

Sounds like a possibility Silvertip. What are the measurements of this switch and the length of the hook up cable? How is this wired to the motor?
