I found this engine (100HA / 4488) 10 hp '76-'77 long shaft on side of road. Asked owner; he said, "take, but needs work." Used to be his spare sailboat engine; he kept electric starter motor for spare for his new engine. I took top off & noticed head bolts loose.

I am going to make this thing run. Any advice before I begin?

Hook a compression tester up to it and crank it a couple of times. If compression in both cylinders is above 100 squirt a couple of shots of marvel mystery oil in each chamber. With plugs out and wires attached ground the threads of the spark plug to the metal on the motor and check for a spark in a dark room. You should see a blue spark on both plugs. Put the plugs back in and crank a few times to work the oil into the cylinders.

Next would be to get a service manual and start working on the fuel system. If compression is low your best bet is to give the motor back or plan on investing some money into it. Parts for that motor are going to be hard to find.

I don't mind investing money; either I put money in it or buy another engine. I've discovered I can buy a used 9 to 10 hp in my area from a guy for $500 - $600. I've already found I can find the carb kit and a few other items for the one I have for about $25 - $30 and I don't mind doing the work myself. I havn't had a chance to test the compression as I've been moving, but will do so sometime next week. I will let you know how it went and thanks for the help.

I wish you luck. That size motor will be a fun project if the cylinders are in good working condition. Keep an eye on ebay under chrysler outboard motors. Lots of cheap stuff there that might help you get the motor running. If you get it running run 24 to 1 mix for the first 6 gallons of gas just to make sure you have a good lubrication base.

Motor wouldn't turn - cylinders were locked. Used PB Blaster to try and free but had to completely disassembled powerhead. Soaked pistons in a chemical dip, then used Dremel w/wire brush @ 15,000 rpm to clean pistons. Broke all piston rings upon removal. Found scoring on one side of lower piston - will clean other tomorrow. Disassembled lower unit - found in great condition. Now searching for new piston rings for reassembly.

Completely cleaned both pistons - found in fair condition. Also cleaned powerhead and found pistons still tight fit in powerhead - now need piston rings for reassembly so I can check compression - any further advice anybody? Oldboat1? Anybody, anybody, Buehler?

Project over - not cost-efficient. Found piston rings at good price, but found that CDI module was missing ($430), plus missing ignition coil ($108) ends project.

I bought mid '80s Honda 4-stroke 7.5 hp that runs for $350.

I will be selling the Chrysler parts for sale on e-bay.
