I am in the process of rebuilding a 1978 model mercruiser 898 chevy 305 engine. I have talked to some machine shops and they tell me I should scap the block because it was in marine service and build one from another block. How can I tell if my block is rebuildable and if so what kind of cleaning should I have done to it.

I would tend to agree with the shop. A engine that old and a marine one isn't worth rebuilding. You can get a core from a car for $100, the shop can get one for you. You can even look into the big rebuilders and get a crate motor, no core charge.

I scrapped my 305 (1980 model 898) in favor of a 350. Everything off the 305 (manifolds, alternator, starter, etc...)bolted right up. I burn a bit more gas...but the extra performance is more than worth it.

Do what ya want...but rebuilding a 305 is a waste of money in my opinion...

Walt

Thanks for the advice, looks like I am going to go with a crate engine. After looking at all the options that seemed like the best way to go. Should have it back togather next week.

What are they saying is wrong with your old block? I tend to think in Walter's direction but if its a freshwater boat I might think different.

Be carefull when re-powering.. The gears in the drive will need to be changed!
