I just got a Johnson 25hp mdel RD17S Serial#1286660 and I was wondering what the "S" means. I thought maybe it meant short shaft but it has a long shaft. I bought this motor cheap just for the contols and steering. The boat is in real bad shape.
Is this a good model for restoration? It looks like it might run but as they say in Maine"Hard Tellin Not Knowin'"
Also is there a way to test a power pack on an Evinrude 7.5 hp 1982? or 84?

RD-17 is a 1955, Rocket. The S is a run number that means nothing to us.

RDs are good engines. I would restore it, but that is mostly my love for old JohnnyRudes.

Thanks JB I will probably go ahead and restore the motor. It does however have a different head than the original which is red. Should I look for an original head or just go with it.

I would just clean and repaint what you have, rocket.

It probably has a non-original leg, too, as a long shaft version would be a RDL-17.

Good luck. :)
