raw water pump: replace or rebuild?

Hard to believe I could not find this issue discussed previously... looked for a while.

2004 305 -Bravo 3 -fresh water cooled engine serial # OW003759

I have water coming out of the raw water pump at the shaft. Obviously needs to be fixed. A new pump is in the $400 range. Is this an easy pump to 'rebuild', and is this a good idea? Seems like the seals are cheap, but what is not cheap is trying to fix something that should be replaced! Is this something that people do with good results, or is it considered better to just replace the pump? What to look for when making this decision?

Thanks

Re: raw water pump: replace or rebuild?

As you may know it's easier to replace the pump, but depending on the damage to the housing, Bearings, Shaft, etc. this pump may be rebuildable. Usually if anything is damaged though, you would be better off just getting a new pump.

For a starting point and helpful tips, Have a look at the link below,

Water pump leaking

There are some better lower cost aftermarket pumps on the market now that you may want to consider.

Hardin Marine - Mercury Sea Pumps

Hope this helps, Good luck.:)

Yea, you probably need a bearing press and that sort of thing, so it is easier to replace, unless you have the proper tooling, etc.
