Has anyone used this product for aluminum hulls? I have an older starcraft riveted aluminum hull.

We do not recommend using bedliner products directly on the aluminum for two reasons..... we have had reports of separation from the aluminum and any future repairs will be a nightmare.

If you are using it to prevent leaks.... go with a gluvit treatment instead ;)

The job of making a riveted hull water tight and last is impossible, when considering vibration, flexing, and the fact that the runners that strengthen the hull are impossible to get inside of unless you can shrink yourself to 1/8 of an inch. When two pieces of aluminum are laid together and then riveted, they are bound to leak at some point. I'm not criticizing the design, movement and flexibility are necessary under the conditions that boats and aircraft go under. Going around every rivet and every lap joint with a product that sets rigid will eventually fail (my opinion:)). Today's technology is Superior to that of the day of riveted boat design of the 70's. If the engineers get together and come up with a solution to once and for all, make a durable, polyurethane product that will stick to aluminum, under salt and fresh water conditions, that market would set a new trend for aluminum hulls all over the world. Maybe prep work is all that is needed to make current products work. The object is to spray on a product on the outside of a hull that will make it water tight for ever.

I ran across this in my research...

I agree that riveted aluminum boats are difficult to keep 100% leak-free...but gluvit is the best product out there and it does a great job. It contains zinc chromate so it self-etches to bare aluminum and holds tightly. It is not "rigid" when it sets, this is from the manufacturer:

Gluvit Epoxy Water Sealer brushes away leaks, seeks out and fills and seals leaks throughout boats and homes. Gluvit is a paintable waterproof epoxy sealer that seeks, fills, and seals cracks in wood, fiberglass, and metal.

Application results in a hard, impact and abrasion resistant protective barrier coat that minimizes fiberglass blistering and corrosion. In addition, the hard protective coating flexes with hull movements to bridge and seal hairline cracks. Application to aluminum fishing boats seals leaky aluminum seams and rivets.

The cure rate gives a long working time that allows penetration into cracks to seal and strengthen. Gluvit fills minor chips and pinholes and is easily painted with most bottom or topside coatings and paints. Can be pigmented with Fiberglass Evercoat coloring agents for color matching. One coat 10 mils thick withstands 4000 Lbs. per square foot of water pressure. Neutral color can be pigmented or painted. Pot life is 1 to 2 hours. Qt.= 2 Lb. unit Gal. = 8 Lb. unit.

Kevin in your case based on past performance a jeep forum just might work for your I/O ;)

Yeah, I looked at the stuff applied to a piece of new aluminum and it will not see the abuse of the marine environment.

I doubt that stuff will penetrate and gluvit penetrates ...... you control your wallet ......do what you feel is best.

opinions are like ???????? everyone's got one
doesn't make them right or wrong

a factory sprayed on bed liner failed on my truck, wouldn't even think of a kit for my boat IMHO
