I'm putting my 1972 Mercruiser 120 back together, new bellows, shift cable etc. The shift cable is a Quicksilver 73723A01, I installed the outer sleave in the bell housing as per instructions and then installed the bell housing on the bellows and gimbal. When I went to install the inner cable it will not go into the outer, I can put it inside the white plastic piece and it will go in about 3 inches and that is it. Is there something I'm missing, I don't want to force it and wreck the teflon coating.
Thanks in advance for your help

Thanks Bondo, it is like there is something soft blocking the cable from going in. I really don't want to have to take the bell housing off again.

I called Mercury about the problem and all they say is return it to point of purchase and get a new one. They have not heard of any problems like this. I checked the old inner cable and it fits and runs smoothly in the new outer. Would it be a good idea to just run with it?

No. Take it back and get a new one, if inner wire is too small for outer the slop between the two will affect shifting.

Re: Quicksilver shift cable

After reading all the posts recommending going with OEM parts instead of aftermarket, I did that with this cable. I purchased all the parts last September so I would be ready to do all the repairs as soon as I had my shop built, which was ready last week. I didn't find out the part was defective till I had the bell housing all installed. I called Mercury on it and they said I would have to go through the point of purchase which was on line. They tell me the part was purchased to long ago, so they can't do anything for me. So much for OEM. I had to order another, this time after market, so this makes for a very expensive shift cable.:mad:

There is obviously something wrong with the OEM cable, why didn't you return it and get a replacement like Merc recommended. You sure aren't making the job any less expensive by not getting it replaced for FREE.

For one thing, If I had been doing the job, I would have tapped the bellhousing out with the straight thread tap and installed the new style OEM cable. SOOOOOOO MUCH better than any aftermarket, or even the old style OEM.

Hey Don, thanks for the reply, the online dealer I bought it from won't do anything for me because I purchased it in September and didn't get to installing it till now. I didn't learn about the new style on this sight till after I had this one.

That's kind of a problem with buying online and not buying locally. Bet with a receipt and an explanation of the problem, your local Merc dealer would have exchanged it for you.

Still, get the new style OEM cable, you will be glad you did.

Thanks for the replys, I wish I could buy from a local dealer the closest one is a four hour drive, and at the price of gas, online is the only way I can go.

I can understand that problem too. Bet you won't be buying parts way ahead of time any more will you.

Well not from the supplier I used anyhow. I could understand it if I had ordered the wrong part, but when it is factory defective, I don't think that is right.
