questions on vro on johnson motor

I have a 40 hp johnson model j40tlccs s/n 6 7725140 1988 it has a vro oil system on it. I had one before and it worked fine but it makes me a little nervous. Is there a way to check it and the alarm or would I be better off to disconnect and mix oil. I understand there is an alarm were is it located at. Thanks
