Purchased a 93 Bay Hawk Dt115 boat two weeks ago as a first time project. previous owner said there was low compression on #4 causing the boat to be a little slower than normal taking longer to plane out. With that being said it was a 1000.00 dollar investment i could tinker with. I have ran the boat 4 time all takeing about 5-7 minutes to plane out. 5th time on the water was cutting right hit a bump all of a sudden tach started working( it didnt in the past) then ran up to about 5800 rpm and was screaming on the water. Compression 130 on 1-3 and 95 on #4.... As i am a complete noob does anyone have any input they would like to share?

Re: Puzzleing Dt115

Just off-hand from what you've said, it sounds like you may have been running on 3 of 4 cylinders causing low power(5 to 7 minutes to plane???), then that 4th cylinder started firing(for whatever reason?), and RPM's went to 5800. Those compression numbers should be closer together, but not real bad... I would check the electricals, plugs, coils, etc., and consider having the carbs checked or cleaned, fuel filters, fuel lines, etc.,etc.
Sounds like it may run pretty good for $1000 boat...just needs some tune-up/TLC! Good Luck!;)

Thanks for the input.... Local mechanic told me to scrap it. Just can't do that. The carbs were supposed to have been rebuilt in the last few months. After inspecting the bottom carb throttle position screw was backed all the way out. Slowly eased down until I reached about 800 rpm at idle. This would explain the erratic idle. If I hold my hand over the carbs should it start to flood out with gas? Also backed each plug out and noticed the engine bog down with each one with a healthy shock to go along with it. I hate walking into this blind! The last thing I need is to dump tons of money into it unless needed. Spent close to 500 so far re- wireing the trailer new marine switches batteries.

Well back again...... After nearly three weeks with no runing issues except for the Buzzer going off for a faultiy oil level sensor...... Replaced my oil flow sensor and the oil level sensor today... turned key and no buzzer GREAT!!!!! Took boat out today and now its back.....RPM gauge will not work again..... back to half power and now i get the REV LIMIT blnking red on the guage, with the buzzer trying to go off.....Start replaceing sensors and back to square one. Any ideas guy? I'm all ears!

those compression numbers are not good.there is definately something wrong with that cylinder that is not usual wear and tear. however, that would not cause what you are experiencing. you sound like some electrical condition which leads to an all or nothing situation:it works or it doesn't

Re: Puzzleing Dt115

We have a winner!!!!! Today I pulled all the tape on the wiring harness inside the box.... I found a ground wire that was burnt up about 6 inches.. Made up a new ground wire and fired it up on the hose. All gauges worked no buzzer and all seems well. The ground was hanging on by literally 4 strands of copper. Now to find out what caused that to begin with... Update. Performed a wet compression test and actually ran 135 on top 3 and 125 on 4. Who knows at this point..... Just goes to show with a little research and the input from this sight, it can be done! Thanks for the support.
