Here is the most basic question there is for a fisher person, but for the life of me I cant put my line on without it twisting. I havent put string on a baitcaster before but Im told thats put on differently. I will be getting one soon.
So how do you set the spool when putting on line?

Re: Putting on new line

here is simple info on basics:
take for example your spool of line is on your right and your reel is facing the spool on your left. When you reel, the line should cause the spool of line to rotate in a counterclockwise direction off the spool (line coming off the top of spool) and directly thru your levelwind on to the reel. THe reel's spool will be rotating in the exact same direction. This will prevent line from twisting. Remember to keep steady, mild pressure on spool of line to keep tight and minimal slack in windings on your reel. Wife works good for this. :D
I will look for a pic to post for you as well. Good luck

After you put your line on the reel.
your first time out on the boat,
let the line out with your lure
and a good swivel. when you rewind
the line in, it will be twist free.

Re: Putting on new line

Dennis
For a spinning reel you want the line to come off the spool same way your reel rotates. If you get it wrong line will twist up right away so turn spool over. Even if you get it right will get some twist. For it to be twist free line spool and reel spool would have the exact same size. That is not possible as line spool starts out big and gets smaller as line goes on reel while reel starts small and gets bigger. Still should not twist too bad.
For the baitcaster run a pencil thru the spool and let it rotate as it goes on the reel.
If you are loading up nylon I recommend you put some backing of dacron on the spool first and make sure you tie the line on the spool where it will tighten. Line should have medium tension as you load it. For the new super lines (spectra) do not need any backing. This line is so slick you must tie to spool button or put some tape on bottom of spool to keep line from slipping around spool. Very important to put this type line on tight all the way or you will have trouble if catch big fish or get hung up. This line will pull down into the line on spool and get locked up if you do not put it on tight.
Leave a couple BIG ones for me.

Not that there has not been some excellent advice given already but if you are like me and buy the good stuff you will find a little papmphlet that comes in the box with it. Follow the dirrections inside and you will be fine.

Hello Dennis
Most of the local bait shops around hear have quite a nice selection of lines on large spools in the shop. Anymore I just get my real and extra spool power spooled up right there in the shop.It does not cost extra to have them do it and it only takes a few minutes. I never have much problem with line twist.

For what its worth----Flathead
