Worthless OMC service doesn't even have prop shaft torque specs or gear oil capacity for a 78 70-3 Rude!!
Anyone know what the proper torque should be?
Engines are 74 and 78 3-70 Rudes.
How much oil should the lower unit hold if drained.
Looks like about 1 qt for refill.

Re: Prop shaft nut torque

The instructions should be on the last page of the lower unit section (probably 6). It will probably tell you to turn the prop nut finger tight and then turn to the next hole for the cotter pin. Use marine grease like OMC/BRP triple guard on the shaft to protect the splines and make it easy to remove the propeller.

The gearcase capacity should be listed in the "specifications" chart in the front of the service manual - usually section 2.

If you are using an after-market manual, you will have to hope that someone with the right one will share the information.

Both gearcases are the same and hold 22 ozs.

No need for a torque value on the prop nut, Ezeke's advice was bang on. These prop wrenches can be handy to keep on board.

A pump for refilling the lu makes the job much easier not to mention cleaner. Also dont forget to change the gaskets on the drain and vent screw. They are a 1 time use only.
