I have a mako 228 with an 1986 evinrude 225 hp---engine has gd compression and runs very well for an oldie....im currently turning a 15 x 17 ss prop....the boat palnes relativly well but you cant back off it too much in rough seas or you fall right off plane and with 4 passengers forget it , the bow is way up ....the boat is heavy in the stern with 0 passengers.....i can get my hands on a 15x15 ss prop but i am concerned the 15 pitch will cause the engine to rev too high....also i was thinking of a 14 1/2 by 17 aluminum 4 blade...i would get a ss 4 blade but i doubt the lower unit and clutch dog can bear the extra weight...it clanks in and out of gear as it is.......what would the experts here go with excluding trim tabs...any thoughts appreciated
thanks

Re: prop pitch/mako 228

I'm running a 200 HP Evinrude with a 14.2 x 17 SS 4 blade. I have no complaints whatsoever with the hole shot. The combo will throw you out the back of the boat. Have tabs on the boat but don't need them to get out of the hole. It takes quite a bit to keep the boat on plane but I blame that on the hull, not the prop.

If you're banging you lower unit getting in and out of gear, you either have a problem in your lower unit or your not shifting quick enough. My LU could care less if it's swinging the 4 blade SS or a 3 blade AL prop.
