I had a friend give me a 17P stainless prop for my Evin but I don't know what prop is on it now. I've looked real close and there are'nt any numbers stamped on the old aluminum prop. I'm pretty sure the prop will fit but how do I determine what the recommended rpm's would be at WOT and if the size and pitch are correct? The numbers on the stainless prop are............48 72764A4 17P

I'm kind of new to boating but I'm learning alot with my 74 Grady White Sportsman and 74 Evinrude. I'm in the process of restoring and these older boats and motors will make you learn alot real quick!

Thanks alot!!!

I don't know if that prop will fit your motor, but you would need a tach to determine the WOT rpms. You should be running 5500-6000 rpms a WOT. What brand of prop is it? 5800 RPM's would be a good number to shoot for.

Here's some interesting info: It's a PDF file

web page

I checked 6 OMC service manuals 1973-1977 115HP.
Full throttle range is 4500-5500 RPM in all of them.

The prop number you give for the SS, is a mercury prop. Your thrust washer isn't right for that prop. 17" pitch sounds about right, but it's gonna have to fit OMC........ :)

BTW, 5500 IS max RPM on that engine.......5.8-6K, is merc territory.

Easy, Props are just that. Look at them both and if there is any similarity, take the old one off and see if the new one fits. That will answer that portion of the question. then assuming it does, try it out, see if you like it better. Personally, I think trying a bunch is better then shooting for manufacturers reccomondation of RPM and various vauge boat sizes.
C

Once again, the number you gave is for a merc. The means of securing the prop are different as are the hub lengths. Props are not "just that".
You DO want to prop for manufacturers recommended RPM.
There is more science to props than there is to the people driving them. :D

Re: prop ??? for 74 Evinrude 115hp

Thanks for all the quick replies.

I just got a chance to try the prop and it will not fit the Evin. :(

I was over at a friends house last night for a cookout, saw the prop and asked him about it and he said it was for Johnson/Evinrude. He asked if I wanted it and just gave it to me. I kind of figured with my luck that it would'nt fit.

Anyway, I'm now loaded with alot of good info for shopping for a new stainless prop.

Thanks again,
Randy

Don't give up on that so easily. Quicksilver props can be rehubbed (Sp?) by prop shops. You just need 13 splines instead of 15. If that prop is in great shape otherwise, you can 1. re-hub 2. swap it for the right one, or 3. sell it on ebay and buy the one you want.

Re: prop ??? for 74 Evinrude 115hp

There is a new prop guy here in town. I met him while at a local marine dealer's shop last week and got his business card. I think I'll take it to him tomorrow and see what he can do. From what I've seen, these stainless props are lots of $$$$$.
Maybe it won't be a total loss after all!
Good idea ezeke!
Thanks!
