I am now seriously scared of of boating. You may have seen my post before about my gas tank problems. I stopped to fuel up before a fishing trip and poored gallons and gallons of gas into my boat when I finally realized that it was taking on too much fuel. Pulled the hull plug and realized that all my gas was going directly from my gas tank into my hull. I drained the hull of 17+ gallons only minutes after fueling up so I know that it is a very bad leak. I checked all the lines and connections and they are good. I then tested the connections for leaks by pooring a few gallons to see if any was leaking out anywhere but nothing. Right now I have about 7-8 gallons of gas in my tank that are below wherever this crack or hole is in my tank. I believe that the tank is corroded but I can't confirm that until I tear the deck apart and get a real look at it. It is common sence though, 15 gallons wouldn't leak out of a hole in any line in the short about of time that it did. It was like I was just pooring gasoline into my hull. This has to be a faulty gas tank. Now I am seriously scared to ever take myself, friends or family out on anything other than a new boat. I thought that I already had about 15 gallons of fuel in my boat so if I would have decided to just go out without topping it off with fuel, I am almost certain that starting the engine or somthing throughout the day would have ignited the fumes creating an explosion and we would all be seriously injured or killed. I think that this is a very important safety issue that needs to be addressed. The tank is inaccessable which means that it is supposed to last, It is almost impossible to know if your tank is corroding and when the corrosion is finally bad enough for fuel to leak out you may not know. I am just glad that the leak in the tank broke through while sitting in my driveway instead of when I hit some wake, fumes to the battery, spark and boom. Proline should really consider the durability of their tanks before people get killed. OK, I think that I have overdone explaining my situation here. Does anyone know if there was a recall on 1989 Proline boats because of the gas tanks. Also do you think that Proline would help me out with at least the repairs being that this is an obvious default by the manufactuer. Anyway, I will be in touch with Proline and see if they are willing to help. I will give everyone feedback of the issue. In the mean time, be safe and always check your fuel lines and bilge before you decide to take the boat out.

Re: Proline Pro-line Gas tank

Your boat is nearly 20 Years Old.............

Proline Isn' going to do a Thing for you.........

Just How Long do you Think that parts Should last.......
If things lasted ForEver,.......
Manufacturers would be Out of Business in only a few years.........

You've got to be just alittle Realistic here...........

Re: Proline Pro-line Gas tank

I understand what you are saying but thousands of people use boats that are much older than mine and I don't believe that there are problems with their gas tank. Another point that I was trying to make is. The gas tank is inaccessable. How am I supposed to know when the tank goes bad. Think about this. How many people take out boats that are 20yrs+. The manufactuers should be making parts like gas tanks last due to safety issues. Especially when they are inaccessable for repair or inspection. I mean the rest of the boat is outliving the gas tank (The most dangerous part) and there is really no way of knowing. I guess the lessons that we can pick up here are, because the gas tank is inaccessable for inspection, boaters all around the world should just take out they're boats until they potentially blow up. That is when you know it is time to make some repairs, as long as you don't die. Come on. This is a serious safety issue and if there weren't regulations about this back when my boat was made, There should be some now.

Re: Proline Pro-line Gas tank

Would it be alright for me to use an external gas tank until I can afford to do the work on my boat and replace my internal tank. I have a 17' 1989 Proline. What procedures should I take to install an external. Also, I can still smell a lot of fumes out of my hull and tank. I think that I might still have a lot of gas in the tank. What can I do to get rid of all the gas and get this boat in safe operating condition? Thanks

Pump it Out........
A Cheap 12V Fuel Pump will pump it right out the gas line into cans in maybe 15 or 20 minutes........

What procedures should I take to install an external.

buy the tank you want,+ it's mounting kit,.........
And Have At It..........

To address your argument:

I would guess that being almost 20 years old, the floor has been replaced? At that time, it would have been common sense to inspect the gas tank and lines and anything inaccessable. So this might shift the blame from the manufacturer to the person maintaining the boat? Just a thought.

Let us know what you find when you tear into it.

Clean up the bilge real good with soapy water and any other area that gas might have gotten, then you can use a remote style outboard fuel tank..

Re: Proline Pro-line Gas tank

we have a 1982 17 foot proline center console and yesterday i took the floor piece under the console off to get 3 dead bunkers out and then the next thing we knew the tank was on the ground......a few things i saw was the foam they used to hold it was crap fell apart yeah i know boats old also have alum.tank and it needs to be replaced cause of surface rot.yeah i know i could fix it but ill some day be in your boat, fuel all over,no thanks i dont think it was a defect on prolines part eventually all man made things breakdown, salt water just helps it along.............as for the fumes i used dawn soap and awesome mix with water and dump it down the bildge then use ur hose to spray inside if u can reach ....then i poured bleach and hit it with the hose again smells gone............
