I don't get a chance to use my boat too often , so I have to crank and crank to prime for engine start......My 3.0 liter has a metal line from the gas pump to the carb , I think it is a federally mandated modification that is standard practice for all 3.0. Can an outboard fuel bulb be somehow used to gas prime the carb?

thanks

are you pumping the throttle when attempting to start the engine cold?
1) this action will set the choke
2) this action will activate the accelerator pump to aid in cold starting
3) you can see this by having someone pump the throttle while you observe the carburetor behavior, just don't have them crank the engine while you are looking into the carb

you can install a primer bulb, but it isn't required and will lost likely be a fire hazard. i would instead observe what you now know should be happening, then troubleshoot if anything listed above isn't happening

My guess is the welch plug in your carb is leaking slowly down the intake and the bowl empties after sitting a while. Then it's tough to start because you have to refill the bowl by cranking the engine. There's a fix to repair a leaking welch plug if that's your case. The good part is you won't have crap ethanol gas going bad in your carb when it sits. Lol. I think the primer bulb is okay as long as it's not in an enclosed engine compartment.

^^Agree, no primer bulbs on IB or IO

Change to electric fuel pump
Similar issue happens with my 7.4 (mechanical pump) but it doesn't take a lot of cranking. After two 20 second cranks it fires. If your pump is weak, or the antisiphon valve is creating more of a restriction, could take longer
