I have an Evinrude 85 HP with a model number 85-799S. This makes it a 1977 ??. I have changed the power pack four times in the past threeyears. I use the motor three or four times a year for one day fishing trips. The mechanic tells me the motor is like new mechanically. I have just finished checking the sensor and charge coils electrically. Both were within the restiance ranges as specified by a 1976 Evinrude service manual. The ignition coils were a different story. Two were changed last year- one measured 350-400 ohms across the secondary winding, theotherone 3200. The other two( old-?) showed about 1400 ohms. all the primary restiances were 0.1 or less. there is no fire on any cylinder. The motor was running good and after starting and idlinf for 4-5 min died upon acceleration.
Can this mismatch 0f coils jjjjjjbe causing the power packs to fail or do I have a more sinister problem? Would appreciate any and all input
Bill A

Re: Power packs

Can't comment except to say I think you're on the right track. My understanding is that flaky coils & flaky connections to coils are a prime cause of PP4 failures.

What one needs is a general-purpose oscilloscope (usually available used for around $50). This instrument would allow one to look at the output signals of the sensors, charge coils, powerpack and coils - I'd bet you'd spot the offending component pretty quickly. Unfortunately, otherwise on these solid-state ignitions we're mostly guessing & replacing parts.

Re: Power packs

coil failure leads to power pack going bad, reason being power from pack has nowhere to go if coils are acting up, thereby blowing up the packs. i would suggest that you change all coils to the right model and change the spark plug wires even, could be rusted in the inside.
