I have recently had to have a replacement skeg welded onto my Mercury outdrive. The weld looks ok, but an additional bead was welded to each side of the skeg increasing the profile.

They painted the skeg, but should I grind the welded beads smooth?

I think its O.K as long as your skeg is straight, but it should"nt be too much work grind and repaint if it looks real nasty.

Jim

Re: Poor Skeg Weld

i would not touch it the only reason to have and extra bead is because a poor welding job was done

the apex of the weld(the bead sticking up) is the strongest part and if there is poor pentration and you grind it off it will break off

let the shop you paid good money to make it right

tommays
