I Have a 20' wellcraft v20---I was getting water in the 'cabin" area so i removed all the fiittings on the bow deck..there was so many useless cleats and hardware pieces that were installed badly( not by me !!!)...i re-fiberglassed the bow deck and it came out great..i primed and painted with " interlux one part enamal" called brightside...i got it at west marine and was told it was the way to go..now, 3 weeks later the paint ( which was applied properly) is cakey and can be gouged with my fingernail..the paint dried its just not really durable..im up there alot and it wont last..im so disgusted with the paiting part of this project...i plan to strip off the paint and sand down to the original glass...ok so now what...what is my best option here..how can i finish the bow area so that its durable..im not as concerned as how it looks as how it performs.....i have heard a 2 part epoxy paint is better also i hear that if you color resin and roller it on the deck it is very durable..i really have no idea where to go ..also whats the best stripper for the current paint...thank you..matt

Yes there are two part paints made by interlux that are much better then the brightside line.

Without knowing where you are this is the temperature advice from interlux
" Product temperature should be minimum 10?C/50?F and maximum 29?C/85?F. Ambient temperature should be minimum 10?C/50?F and maximum 35?C/95?F. Substrate temperature should be minimum 10?C/50?F and maximum 29?C/85?F."
and I know living in the Northeast I will not see those ambiant temps for some time.

Bond-o is right...... it may be dry but must cure. You did not mention how many coats or how it was applied.

Re: painting boat HELP!!!!!

Something didn't cure right. The brightside product is a good paint but proper primer and thinners have to be used. I don't know that they weren't... I'm just saying that the paint is particular about the oils in enamel thinners verses lacquers, synthetic versions etc. You use there "stuff' or it doesn't work. A scraper sounds appropriate for the removal. ALSO... get on line with your Interlux reps. Tell 'em what happened. Maybe they can help.

I repainted my SeaRay with Petit EZ poxy after a good sanding. I also used their primer and thinner based on GOOD advise. I got a GREAT finish, hardened in no time and it self leveled so that the brush strokes and foam roller "marks" were smooth by the time it dried. HIGHLY recommended!

As for why your paint didn't harden? Can't tell you but this I will say... The outfit you got your paint/advise from sold me down the road too. I was lucky and got a second opinion before I painted. Sorry about your hassle...
