I have a fiberglass houseboat I am planning on painting this fall. It was very chalky this year and has been on there for 3 years. What is the best way to prepare this surface?

What's been chalky, the existing topcoat?? Best way to do it is getcha some 50 grit and 80 grit sandpaper, and sand the crap outta it. A air-powered sander might be the best way to go, depending on size of craft. Start with 50, go to 80, then maybe even to 120 after that. Depending on whether or not there are any cracks (crazing) or otherwise minor damage, you might want to get some filler (west marine carries some good stuff), and then primer over that. Topcoat, and you're done. There's a book called "Runabout Renovations" that's sold on Amazon.com or half.com (ebay) for about $20. It's a fantastic guide to showing you how fix 'er up. I'm in the middle of doing my fiberglass work on my piece, and the paint will come within a month. Let me know how your project turns out. If you weren't ever even planning on doing this yourself, sorry for the detail, but the preparation makes the project, bad prep, and the paint'll be flaking off in a matter of months, make sure you clean the ENTIRE surface with acetone to get of all the dust and especially any grease, etc. Later

Re: Painting boat bottoms

Thank you, I will be doing it myself. The current bottom coat is chalky. Its a houseboat 38x12, lots of work. What is best to work the top fiberglass? There is rough fiberglass on top for walking on, what is the best way to treat this? I noticed a few small cracks alsovery small hairline cracks near the seams of the boat, what should I do with those? Thanks in advance

As far as your cracks and such, I've been just using my fiberglass resin (same as what I'm using on my repair jobs on the transom) and filling them - mine are tiny cracks. I know you can get some epoxy? filler from West Marine that works that same as a wood filler - fills in the cracks before you primer. Mine are minor plus my boat isn't the best in the world, I just don't want it to look like hell. After you fill the cracks, sand like crazy, and primer. I probably shouldn't be the only one telling you about this stuff, since I haven't been through a completed project yet. Later
