Hey guy's, I am currently stripping some topside paint on my Nassau and was looking for tips on paint in the forum and saw that Kev had used rustoleum marine paint on his boat. I went to the rustoleum site and was not able to find what I was looking for...namely a marine primer. I kept seeing in the posts to use ZC or risk corrosion and since this boat will be in salt  I wanted to make sure I got the right stuff, As well as the right paint. Any info would be great !!! Thanks, Steven

Hey Steve what Kev actually used was regular old rustoleum. I also used regular old rustoleum on my boat. The differance between our boats is mine was stripped like your planning to do and Kev just sanded his origianl paint and rolled new paint over it :D.

The Zinc Cromate I used I got from NAPA in rattle cans . Their item number is 7222 and it is usually hidden in the back with the PRO paint supplies not out front with the DIY paint stuff. I did a heavy dusting coat with the ZC let it dry and then used regular Rustoleum Gray Aluminum primer ( available at Lowes or Homie Desperate ) I got it in quart cans . I then painted it with regular rustoleum paint from the same stores also in quart cans ( my color didnt come in gallons ) .

Thanks Rick, that is what I needed to know. I have a gallon of auto primer but this will save breaking out the sprayer until the final coat. Not sure how I feel about rolling the boat. Steven

Hey Capt. ,The original paint on these hulls ..60's and 70's....was vinyl ! You can paint over the original as long as you seal the old paint . i used ZC on all prepared bare aluminum and epoxy sealed the whole shebang before applying top coat (2part ureythane) R emember that these are aluminum and will expand, contract and flex...use a tough paint that's not going to get too brittle! I choose urethane because they recommend it for corvettes and other flexable skinned cars. but then again I sprayed mine..don't know iffin you can roll and tip this paint though. My long winded point is ...iffin you don't take it to bare metal and ZC ...at least seal the old paint from the new. Have a ball with your resto..lookin good !

Just to reafirm what Rick says..I used the same ZC from napa..and the same rustoleum gray aluminum primer (2 coats) and regular ustoleum (gloss Black) 2 coats...and it is looking real nice.. I used 2 coats primer to hide/fill imperfections on the hull. I am impressed at how well it rolled with a 5" foam roller. Seems hard as nails.
