Outdrive to transom seal on a Volvo 280?

Hi All... I posted this a few weeks ago in another forum and got no answer at all... I'm hoping this isn't a difficult question, but here goes...

On our 1972 Glencoe Tri-hull, there is currently a caulked seal around the outdrive where it meets the transom. My question is: Is there supposed to be some kind of rubber seal or gasket here, or is it supposed to be a caulk/RTV type seal?

Any help would be appreciated!

Mine has that also, but there has been discussion either here or the baylinerowners web page about whether that is just a precaution some used or a means of covering over some other problem...like water seeping into the transom core...bad.

I have a 1980 Starcraft with the volvo 280 stern dirve, and it had no caulking type seal in the engine compartment. But I did put one on the outside to stop it from leaking I used "marine goo". didnt stop the leak though turns out it was loose. Could be the previous owner did the same thing as me.
