Outdrive oil usage??

Had the outdrive lube changed (I know I could probably do myself, but its a time thing)before the season and have used the boat twice so far. I've added an ounce or so to the resevoir after each time. After an oil change, is this normal to have to add a little after levels settle after using, or should I suspect a LEAK? Haven't seen any evidence of oil/lube anywhere. If I shouldn't have to virtually ever add lube, and therefore suspect a leak, does this mean I shouldn't take it out again until found (i.e. dangerous to have any leak whatsoever)

1997 Sea Ray, 4.3L Merc. Re: Outdrive oil usage??

I just bought the exact same boat/motor and mine does the same thing. I'm thinking that I have a leak in the hose that runs from the reservoir to the outdrive but there's not a lot of room to get in there an find it. If the hose clamp connecting the hose to the outdrive is the same as the cheap plastic one connecting it to the reservoir then that may be the culprit. You could also check your vent holes on the outdrive to see if you are leaking there. If they didn't replace your o-rings when they changed it then that might be your problem. Either way I wouldn't hesitate to run it, just monitor it closely and keep adding oil as necessary. Anybody else seen this problem on these 4.3Ls?

If you have an oil leak there will be tell signs such as rainbows on the water behind you boat and it takes very little oil to slick around your out drive. If inside I'm sure you can find it in the hull by feeling around.

Flashback is correct...outdrives do not use lubricant, but those with external resevoirs tend to require the addition of some lube after initial refill. I was out in my friends brand new boat last week end and the audible alarm sounded indicating low outdrive fluid level. His outdrive had been filled by the dealer just two weeks before. You probably have nothing to worry about, just keep an eye out. Best of luck.

Mrbill is right. when your dealer drains your unit they more than likely drain that resevoir also. at will take a bit to get it back up to level as it sets it will have to go through the lines also with nothing open on the bottom side of those lines it takes awhile to refill. In my winterization I usually clamp the line just after the resevoir so i don't loose as much.
nickster

Great suggestions and thoughts. I'll look for the slick behind the boat next time I'm out and look everything over. I'm betting its just settling, etc. because prior to change, i never added a drop last season.
