Re: outdrive oil plug

sgajan,
I would strongly suggest to get an OEM Mercruiser manual before you attempt to perform any maintenance on your engine and/or outdrive.

Alpha 1 has 2 "plugs"... One os on the left upper side (port side) if facing from the gear of drive.
The other one is on the bottom on the same side.
Top one is an "oil vent screw" bottom one is "gear lube drain screw".

To replace gear lube:
Open bottom screw and top screw, tilt the outdrive forward and let all oil drain out.
New oil is pumped through the bottom hole, untill it starts comming out from the top hole.
Good luck on that!

I don't have a picture but, if you are looking grom the back of your boat, on the left side of your outdrive, opposite side of the prop, you will find the drain plug. Look at the left side towards the top and you will see the plug used for filling the drive, and on the top in the center you will see the plug that is supposed to have the dipstick in it. Hope that helps. If you remove the screws, I would replace the gaskets under them, they are cheap.

Vipzach,
Drive is filled from the bottom screw to the point until you see lube coming out of top "vent screw".

DIPSTICK ??? Does your drive have it??? Mine just has magnetic end screw...

Pictures and explanations coming up. Just follow all the different links and find out all kinds of neat "Mercstuff".
Then get the Mercruser service manuals for full and real details on your repairs and service.

http://www.mercstuff.com/howdoi.htm

Lenny, sorry about that, that is the vent hole...don't know what I was thinking. No mine does not have a dipstick, I was told it should by several people, but not actually seen one with the dipstick.
