outdrive may be LEAKING????

i noticed over the last couple of weeks that a film on the water near the drive whenever a wake hits the boat while we are moored. Wondering what this may be. Then last week i was cleaning the boat in the water and noticed some milky white lube at the top of the drive (the fill screw)? smelled like 80w90 gear lube. wiped off and checked when we got to the marina. No more was seen, however this is starting to make me wonder?? Last winter i had the water pump replaced and bellows or boots changed. No seals. could this be the seals or the tilt trim rams? or what... oh to top it off. i cant get at my trailer right now, it s in storage and i want to know if i can check the lube in the water??? Damn its always something with this boat.... ohhhhhhwelll

I guess that would depend a lot on the Make, model, and year of your drive.

I dont think i can ,,, if i remember right, the top of the drive is always under water?? or is it.. have to look tommarrow

what would make this suddenly start leaking, and could it be the seal on the fill screw? is there one? i checked for tightness when at the dock. and it was tight, however that is where i noticed the white looking lube..??? THANKS

There is a plastic seal under that fill screw, as there is under the drain and fill screws on the lower unit. Any of them could be leaking. See if you can get a snorkle mask and see where is is leaking from. Ultimately you have to pull the boat and get it pressure tested before more damage occurs. You may find a lot of water in the gear oil. A quick check is to remove the bottom most drain screw on the lower unit, if water comes out first, then gear oil, or the gear oil is milky looking, it's off to the shop!

i hate my mechanic... he was supposed to completly go throught the drive this past winter... and when i caalled him about the leak.. he says )i dunno.. could be a number of things. But i didnt change the seals... WHAT??? i wanted it complete. He says all he did was change the water pump and do a boot job. WTF?? now i am in the water at a well and trailer is in storage.. gotta figure out how to get it out.. and find a new mechanic.. so p.oed

well .. i was out yesterday, and didnt notice any oil leaking.. no spots or no oil on top of drive fill screw... think i will still pull out of water and check the oil tomarrow.. hope its not milky????

Got the boat out.. not milky white , but yellowish milky, not really bad but you know there is water gettin in...i think the top check plug seal is bad.. gonna change all 3 and change fluid and check in a week or so again. >???? Any suggestions, Thnaks
