Outboard or I/O?

General question: Overall for general maintenance year after year what is cheaper an outboard or I/O? What about simpler?

I have had I/O's on my last two boats and have found it pretty costly to have it winterize and serviced every year.

Re: Outboard or I/O?

Howdy, CXrob. I'm not an expert on this because I've never had an I/O, mainly because I am a fisherman and I like small boats (17-20'). I would expect an I/O to cost too much to buy and to maintain for my use. If I were into bigger boats, skis, tubes and mucho speed, etc. I might feel the opposite. So I guess it depends on your priorities.

For my use, it's outboards. . .hands down.

Bon Voyage.
JB

The outboard is cheaper for maintance. But if you are any kind of mechanic you can fix a I/O alot cheaper than a out

Re: Outboard or I/O?

When you ask a question like this you are going to get a wide range of responses. I will give you my opinion based on the fact that I have recently owned both a 3.0 mercruiser I/O and 200 hp Evinrude outboard. If you boat in salt water as I do, I feel your best bet is an outboard motor. I had a very difficult time keeping salt water out of my engine compartment when I had the I/O. I also had to change the bellows, gimble bearings, risers and manifold every 2 or 3 years because of the salt. Those repairs can get quite expensive. My outboard was much easier to maintain. I performed routine maintenence for the first 5 years before recently having to change the propshaft seal. If I were boating in freshwater only I might be more inclined to buy I/O. You get more horsepower for the money and the salt will not kill you. Gas milage for me was much better with the I/O, but much less work keeping the outboard running. Just my two cents. Good luck in your decision.

Re: Outboard or I/O?

Yearly maintenance will ALWAYS be cheaper on an outboard than a I/O...and generally speaking, an outboard is easier for a D-I-Yer to maintain anyway....tradeoffs are less fuel efficiency, more emissions, and engine lifespan...

Hey, guys! I just realized that I expect the best of both worlds from my new EFI, 4 stroke outboard. That's another option for you to evaluate, CXrob.

Happy boating.
JB
