Ok guys, looking for a few pointers here on things to look for before I throw parts at it that will not fix the problem. I have a 1992 60hp evinrude. Motor is bogging down when i open up the throttle. It has become a little difficult to start but once started it will idle all day if need be. Once I get above about half throttle you can really hear it bog down and I am only getting somewhere in the neighborhood of 2500 rpms. Once it bogs down it will usually die while i have the throttle open or will die when i return it to neutral. Once this happens it is a bear to start again. This has happened a couple of times before and I would remove the spark plug wires from the plugs and replace them making sure they were seated good, this used to take care of the problem but does not anymore. I replaced the plugs but that did not cure the problem I have read the forums here and this is what i am going to check this weekend.
1. check tank, fuel lines for gunk
2. start motor on muffs and remove one spark plug wire at a time to look for a drop in rpm
3.check for water in carbs.

Are there any other suggestions? I am estimating it is a carb problem as they have never been rebuilt. If so how hard are these to take apart, clean, and get back together correctly. I really hate to take it to a mechanic if I can avoid it. Thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide.

Re: Outboard bogging down under load

Fred I had the same problem under load ,ran fine in driveway , on river it bogged down and no power . i think ur right the carbs need to be torn apart and soaked overnight, then blown thru all the passages to make sure there clear . I ve read b4 not to use air, I use carb cleaner or wd40 and make sure there clear , where it goes in , it has to come out , payin special attn to all the small passages. hope this helps , good luck

Put some of your gas in a clear jar and let it settle a while. If there is a seperation of gas/water start by cleaning out the tank.

Classic symptom of clogged carb(s). It's customary to do a compression test and spark test first. Since you'll do both carbs (assuming compression and spark check out), the cylinder drop test is moot, but the fuel tank inspection is always a good idea.

Re: Outboard bogging down under load

Thanks for all of the advice guys. I am going to check everything but I am pretty sure the carbs are clogged. HAd a few free minutes this evening and i looked at my inline fuel filter(which was replaced about three months ago) and there were alot of black specs in it. What can i expect to pay for a mechanic to clean the carbs? Is there any chance that if i clean the tank(if it is dirty) replace fuel hoses, and add some sea foam that the gunk in the carbs will dissolve. Once again thanks for all of the help.

Re: Outboard bogging down under load

Expect around $100 to $120 apiece for carbs.

Seafoam is great stuff, I use it, keeps the carbs clean, but it's not a solvent. Besides which, the gaskets, orings and especially the float valves need replacing ever once in awhile.

Don't be intimidated -- these carbs are remarkably simple devices. Just follow the instructions under "carb cleaning" in Tashasdaddy's link above. Any questions, just ask.

You can do it.

not to sound redundend , but i belive that the carbs are the issue , sounds like a blockage to me . the bogging under load is a sign of a fuel starvation .

Re: Outboard bogging down under load

Thanks for all the great tips. here is where i stand now, i had a few minutes today and i looked at my inline fuel filter, and it was filthy and completely blocked with gunk. I pumped some gas into a clear jar and settled at the bottom was some black specs. I obviously have to check the tank and look to see if it needs to be drained and I need to replace my fuel lines but here is my question. Again this is a 1992 60hp evinrude The tank is a 20 gallon plastic one that is under my back deck of the bassboat. When i opened the back hatch and was trying to see the lines running from the tank I noticed there were two. Why are there two lines running from my tank? To clarify there were actually three, but i am not counting the one that runs from the gas cap into the tank

Another question, like i stated in my first post this used to happen every now and then (motor bogging down at wot) and I would remove the spark plug wires and reinstall them on the plugs themselves making sure they were seated good. could my loss of power be an electrical issue with something as simple as new spark plug wires?

The other line from your tank is the vent. An easy way to check plug wires is to run it in the dark. If you see blue sparks on the wires they are bad. They may be bad with no sparks but they definitely are bad with the sparks.

Re: Outboard bogging down under load

I had the same problem with a 91 johnson 60 hp that I bought last year,,, same as your OB I think. It had been sitting for over a year.I pulled the carbs and found lots of crud in the bottom of the float bowl so I bought three carb kits from iboats,, fifteen bucks and change each. You can buy the kit with or without new floats. My floats looked ok so I used the old ones. They were easy to clean and reinstall with the new gaskets and float needle with seat. http://shop2.evinrude.com/ext/index.aspx?s1=a0b201e44ed167574594d3f9acfcc260 parts/carburetor section has a diagram of the carb.. There are two jets in your carbs, one on top, the idle jet and one below the float bowl, the main jet. I took the jets out of mine to be shure they were clean but broke one on the way out, only seven bucks but I had to order it and wait and getting the broken jet out was a job. I would advise you not to remove the jets, just shoot some carb cleaner through them. I replaced the fuel line while I was at it. Last thing was tune the carbs and I found step by step instructions on how to do that right here in iboats top secret section. She runs like a champ now!

I suspect (based on personal experience) that some of that crap in the gas tank gets sucked up to the inlet screen, then clears in the time it takes you to re-seat the spark plug wires.

'Course that doesn't rule out the plug wires leaking voltage to ground; spark plugs can do that too when they get old enough.

Re: Outboard bogging down under load

Thanks for all of the info here is what i am going to do and i will report back whenever i can get the time to take her to the lake. Drain fuel tank, replace fuel lines, new fuel filter, new plugs, check compression and check spark plug wires. also replace with fresh fuel, and a good shock treatment of sea foam. I figure check the simplest things first before diving into a carb rebuild. once again thanks and if you have any other info or advice i welcome it.

Re: Outboard bogging down under load

The small black specks in the fuel filter are usually from the fuel lines degrading. Pull the drains on front of carbs and see if any "specks" come out with fuel, if so I suggest a carb clean, fuel line replacement from VRO back to inlet fitting and from VRO to carbs..also look to see if you have a solid orange wire that connects to pack( not the coil one) if so that engine has the SLOW feature and you moving/changing the plugs may been moving the connection..

Re: Outboard bogging down under load

Yank the carbs!! Its easy I had to do it twice. They have little screens pencil eraser size that the scale clogs up. I didn't even replace the gaskets. Mine are rubber and not shrunk. Runs like a champ. Get the glass filter that you can take apart and replace the element then carry plenty of new cartritges. Sea Foam should break up the gunk over time cause it has naptha in it, but I would get the fuel out of the tank, replace with new.

Re: Outboard bogging down under load

VERY simple to do.
Order the rebuild kits and just do it.
I rebuilt 6 last year, first one took 45 minutes, the 6th carb took me 2 minutes. It takes longer to get them off the engine than rebuild them.
I'd say they're long overdue.
