Well my force 120 lost compression in one cylinder so i went ahead and found what i think is a great mercury. It's a 1999 Mercury 115hp. It has great compression in all 4 cylinders and only has 402 hours. I'm hopin it will add some performance to my boat since my old motor was probably only pushing 100hp. Also i was told that the force motors were rated at the crank while the mercury i have is rated at the prop. I got quoted about $1500 for a rebuild on my force and then found this motor for $2200 and decided it would be worth it to spend the extra money. Let me know what you guys think.. I feel like i got a great deal going off of what i saw other older outboards going for.

Always a step in the right direction to get rid of a Force.

Do you realize that if you do the work yourself, you can rebuild that Force for 500 or less--if only one cylinder needs repair? Then you would also avoid the hassle of re-wiring and changing controls for the Merc.

Your mechanic was incorrect: All Force engines were rated at the prop. Chrysler (which became Force) started changing the rating from crankshaft to propshaft as early as 1979.

However, It is also a known fact that Mercs were and probably still are under rated--meaning they usually deliver more than the rated horsepower.

If you should decide to repair the Force, take the time to port the bypass ports only--leave the exhaust ports alone. Install some Boyeson reeds and the combo should get you 10-15 HP more.

Then see if you can find a 2-1 lower unit. It will really make the Force sit up and run--to the tune of 3-5 MPH more with the properly pitched prop. (wow! PPP. Thats alliteration!)
