Re: Oregon inlet N.C.

We were coming in the inlet in a 65-footer when on the radio another captain warned me if I keep on course I was going to run aground. I was between the markers.....I ended up waiting on him to lead me the way. The local captains had milk jugs painted red and green anchored to the bottom which we followed in. I would still be there if He wasn't there to help me.

Good for him for helping you in.

People around here would have just video'd you running aground and then put it on Youtube.

Around where I live I have never saw more a holes on the water.

Re: Oregon inlet N.C.

We were coming in on an outgoing tide on a beautiful afternoon,23 maycraft yama F200.in the channel current was very strong.we crested a stationary wave and I could see the bottom in the trough!we dropped in and were stuck there for about 2 mins.@ wot!!I looked 2 the shore 30 yrds maybe we were not going anywhere!and all the while this ugly, brown 6/8 foot crest was right behind the boat.it reminded me of a japanese tsunami painting!no one said a word so as not to distract our somewhat experienced captain who warned us on the way out about the legendary rough conditions.after what seemed like an eternity we slowly made forward progress and continued on.I believe there had been alot of rain inland earlier that may or may not have increased the tide that day.it was a very exciting passage w a pucker factor of at least 9.5!!!another trip for a stipper tournament we were outbound past the bridge I looked back and two 25+/- contenders came racing out i watched both boats launch strait up about 6/10 feet out of the water and come crashing down hard.I was glad to not be on one of those boats w those idiots.and dont understand how they didnt do a backflip, it looked like they were completely vertical!!I understand the channel changes constantly and is always unpredictable.

Ive seen your inlet on TV.I would not like that on a good day!!you can google earth and look at ours,it drains a large relatively shallow sound and rain and winds can force more water out w the tide.the inlet is only 150 or so yrds wide and always challenging w tide changes.

Ye who hesitates in OI is lost.

I've sat outside and waited for the tide a couple of times. Followed a "battle crusier" out a couple of times as well. Once you make that decision to come in there is no turning around. Power up and go for it.

You think OI is bad, try running Hatteras Inlet with a stiff SE wind.

Re: Oregon inlet N.C.

We have waited too, actually we just went back to fishin for an hour or so.but that day we had to get in soon, somthing about somebody going to work that evening.i think they would have to gone to work late if they new what we were about to experience!!4 of us would support his excuse!! and it was january cold cold water. My brother turned around at morehead outbound 21 grady white.a seasoned friend still gets angry about that years later.he said my brother almost killed them all, and they were almost out anyway.i was not there.and my brother has not taken dads old boat to the coast since then.I think he lost interest or something that day!!The maycraft captain liked to follow the battleships out in the morning 4 or5am at Oregon inlet because of the shifting channel between the bridge and marina.so close one morning we could hear the guys on the back of the big boat talking!!he said his boat would slow faster than the 60 footer so it wasnt too dangerous!!!He gpsed his route one day,and the next morning ran aground briefly where it was fine the day before.i think ill just surf fish at hatteras if I can find a spot not taken.Ive heard stories about it (the inlet) too, but not been out there yet!!maybe one day !!

The shores are lined up during the bluefish run, but worth every minute of it. Night fishing for drum is easier.

It must have been a while since you've been there. There has not been a good run of bluefish on those beaches in over 20 years. The last big run I fished was in 1991. The Blues left when the Striped ones started arriving in force.

I have not fished for blues there since I lived there in late 80's, early 90's..... that was fantastic..... Called in sick. Almost lost my job...every cast a blue..... What are the "Striped ones"? I'm missing something. Are they offshore?

Re: Oregon inlet N.C.

Sripped Bass.We caught them at Nags Head 2/4 years ago like crazy in Jan/Feb.4 at a time sometimes, trolling 1mile or so offshore.I could not beleive there were only two or three boats in sight almost all day.20-30+#ers and you can catch them in the surf and sound also.they are evedently making a good comeback from overfishing in the Rockfish selling days.Sometimes theyll school bigtime and if you can get there before they move or dive you can cast anything on lighter tackle and catch one every cast.much more fun than trolling imho.It can be cold/windy but you dont seem to notice that when theyre biteing!!

We caught about 120 fish that day, mostly blues, but these 41 are what we kept. (35 Blues, 5 Spanish, 1 Sheepshead)
