I stopped by my local mercury dealer to ask about the 150 optimax, and what type of maintenance is required. He stated that due to the amount of heat these motors generate, you MUST change the waterpump and impeller every season. He also stated the spark plugs cost $20 each. What have you experienced with these motors.

Thanks

Heat? The spark plug is made by NGK they list for 28.00. You can order this spark plug at autozone for 11.77. The water pump and thermos should be changed every 100 hrs of service. V

RE: should you change water pump if engine only has 20 hours?

That depends on age. If it's only had 20 hours but has been sitting around a while since then, or if it's been something like a 20 hours over 3 years situation, then yes. During storage they tend to for "memory" in the impeller blades and that can cause a low water pressure situation. I had it happen to me, put in a new impeller but then boat sat for 2 1/2 years, and it needed another one when I took it out of storage, but it only had about 1 hour on it.
