...recently replaced a freeze-cracked 3.0 liter in my '91 Bayliner Capri with a brand new engine.
This boat used an overheating warning buzzer which I ditched in favor of an electric water temp. guage configured in fahrenheit and I need to know what is a normal operating temp. range. Also you boaters with guages what is the hottest you will run your 3.0 liter engine before you shut 'er down.

Re: Operating temperature?

Operating temperature is a function of the thermostat that you have installed. I run consistently at 175 deg F. and I believe that I have the manufacturer's recommended thermostat installed. Operate in 60 degree fresh water (upstate NY) and 80 degree brackish water (Va Beach) with once through cooling on a 3.0 LX Alpha 1. Hope this helps.

Re: Operating temperature?

I have a brand new 07 bayliner 185 w/ 4.3 V6 Merc non MPI model.

It also runs at 175 degres and is normal. My old I4 in my old webcraft seemed to run around the same temp.

175 degrees here too... 1995 3.0L
Significant deviation on the high side means something is wrong. Over 200 and I'd be very concerned.

Re: Operating temperature?

My 1988 3.0 won't go over 140 no matter what condition it's in. Even changed the thermostat in it with no change in temp. After a good hard run, I can lay my hand on the valve cover with no problem.
