I just bought a used outdrive that has been sitting for a few years it's a 1988 1.47 1.50 ratio is just cracked it open to day all seals seem great needs a new pump I let the old oil out it had a little water in it I'm thinking it just condensation format sitting getting warm and cold but was wondering wet else I should look at or replace before I take the boat 20 miles out on the water any imput would be great

It shouldn't get enough condensation in it to see if the oil is full and it's all sealed up. I'd be putting in new seals.
While it's apart check the sliding clutch for wear on the dogs. Check the bearings for any rust and make sure they rotate smoothly. Check the gears for hair line cracks or pitting.
A seal kit will come with new water pump gaskets, so if you pump housing is OK you'll just need to add an impeller.

Before you start taking it apart, pressure test it and see what, if anything is leaking and needs replaced.

Ayuh,..... Donno exactly what yer askin',..... Fill it up, 'n run it,.....

It'll either be Ok, or it'll chew up the gears,.....
Odds are, the 1st oil change will show brown rusty oil,.....
If it's also fulla metal, it's on it's way out,.....
If that's the case, save yer money, 'n buy a New SEI drive from iboats,....

Ya already blew yer coin on this drive, to pay to have the upper gear set replaced, yer into the same money as a New SEI,....

I bought the outdrive for 50 bucks off my buddy he bought a used boat and found out the stringers are bad and it's been sitting in his back yard for almost 2 years so my thoughts are if I have to put new seals in it so be it for 150 or 200 it worked great 2 years ago

Ayuh,.... You pressure tested the seals already,....

If the rust on the gears is just discoloration, No problem,.....

If the gears are rust pitted, it's gonna fail,...

Again, for the price of the seal kits, plus the labor to install, plus a upper gear set, you've spent more than a new SEI drive,.....

If the bearin's are pitted, you'll be well over the price of a new SEI,.....

Ayuh,.... I'm a life long Mechanic, small motors 50 odd years ago, heavy equipment 'n 'bout everything else for the last 40,......

The tools alone necessary to do a decent job rebuildin' an Alpha drive is 'bout the price of a new SEI drive, or more,....

I've got a Bud, I've known for nearly 2 decades that wrenches on Alphas day in, 'n day out, when he's workin',.....
He used to charge me $100. to tear down, clean, 'n rebuild an Alpha, provided I supplied all the parts,....
Last year, he upped it to a buck, 'n 1/2,.... Still a Deal, but parts ain't cheap,....

I ain't layin' out the couple grand for the tools, 'n I ain't gotta learn all the steps, 'n nuances of the various changes in the Alpha series,.....
I learned along time ago, some specialties of mechanicin' are best left to the Specialists, rather than doin' the job several times yerself, hopin' to get it Right,.....
Kinda like goin' to a brain surgeon with a toothache,...

Lake Time I rebuilt my upper myself I bought both drive and driven gear shim tools off eBay used 160..I got lucky and picked up an oem gear set with timkin bearing pack and lower bearing brand new New old stock eBay 199.99.Great deal.seal kit was 30 bucks spanner wrench 30. CDI inch pound Dial torque wrench 150. Need to set preload on roller bearings. Slide hammer 100. I had an old lower that was junk so I cut the drive shafts just above the water pump and welded a socket on it to cheak the Driven shafts bearing preload so no cost there. Buy extra shim packs aswell.I also bought a merc manual 50 bucks eBay. Follow it to a tee... It took me a few attempts to get preload and gear mesh set perfectly. But being a wrench slinger I'm sure you wouldn't have a problem. Keep in mind my prices are in Canadian. I lucked out on the gear set and yes it was oem merc numbers still in original packaging. That kit in Canada is 800 plus.
