Hi all,

Will an engine coupler from a 1996 volvo 3.0 i/o work with an OMC outdrive? I know the crank side will work, I need to know about the splined side that takes the outdrive shaft.

Thanks!

Re: OMC 3.0 / Volvo 3.0 coupler

Good Question......
You're the Guy with Both of them sitting in front of you......
Do they Fit ????
I'd find it Really Hard to Believe they're the Same... Not only the pitch,+ size of the splines, But the over-all dimentions... Distance between the crankshaft + the outdrive input shaft ??? Depth of the splines ??? Distance + Clearence in the Gimbal Housing ???
I Agree with your other post... The crankshaft bolt pattern Should be the same....
Mercruiser uses several Different Patterns of Couplers, But they all use the Same outdrive input shaft....

Re: OMC 3.0 / Volvo 3.0 coupler

Bondo, I passed up on the 'complete' used engine I was looking at, I found a new 2000 3.0 long block for $1200 (w/ 1 year warranty) so I jumped on it. I'm looking around for the 12.75" flywheel and the coupler since the crank pattern is different on this 2000 than it is on the 1988. Thanks for the help though!

The coupler I am looking at is off a 1996 VOlvo Penta 3.0. The ebay listing says "OMC" int he title as well, but I don't know if it will work or if it is just there to attract bidders. I emailed the seller but haven't heard back yet.

Here's the listing:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2436702039&category=26455

Thanks again!

I Wish I could help you Steve......
I don't do OMCs or V/Ps.... Much less 4cyls....
I think that fellow is using "Key" words for his auction listing...
I thought Chevy changed to the 1 pc. seal bolt pattern in 86 ???

Good Luck...

Re: OMC 3.0 / Volvo 3.0 coupler

The block I have is an 87 (stamped on it) and it's still a 2 piece. There seems to be widespread confusion on the date.

Re: OMC 3.0 / Volvo 3.0 coupler

Still looking for an answer on this.

I have an 1988 OMC Cobra outdrive and bellhousing. I have a 2000 3.0 long block engine.

I need to know if the coupler from a 1996 Volvo Penta 3.0 will also fit the OMC Cobra outdrive. Basically, are the splines the same?

Steve,
Do you still have the old coupler off the 88? It might work for what I'm doing. Replacing an 87 5.7 one piece seal motor with an older two piece seal motor. Cobra drive. If it fits you wanna make a deal?

It would have fit, and you could have it for free, but I just a month ago finally got rid of it because I didn't need it and couldn't find anyone that did, sorry!!!

olbuddyjack, the coupling for a 3.0L will not work on a 5.7L. He was just going from an OMC to a Volvo coupler, and they are the same.

Crap. Any idea what would work? Its an early sbc with a two piece seal mated to a Cobra drive. I tryed a Merc coupler but it seemed loose at the splines. I don't know if it was worn or just that much different.

Re: OMC 3.0 / Volvo 3.0 coupler

I may be wrong, but I think that the coupler from the 3.0 will fit the 5.0/5.7. Same crank bolt pattern if I remember right.

Like I said I could be wrong. ;)

Re: OMC 3.0 / Volvo 3.0 coupler

The bolt pattern may be the same, but the part numbers are different. Rather there are different rubber compounds for the 2 or the outsides are made different, I don't know. But the V8's are good for around 300hp, and the 3.0's only have 135, so you be the judge.
For a 5.0/5.7 you want PN 3858437 That is a Volvo number and can also be found on the OMC chart at dougrussell.com.
For a 3.0L, the PN is 3854032.
You can order the coupling from any Volvo dealer or online supplier that has Volvo.

Re: OMC 3.0 / Volvo 3.0 coupler

The doug russell site is a good reference, I have been able to find Volvo parts that will fit OMCs that way before, since Volvo bought out their interest in the joint venture sterndrive business.
94 and up just about all the drive parts are the same, 91 and up the exhaust systems on the V-8 and V-6 are pretty similar too.

Re: OMC 3.0 / Volvo 3.0 coupler

FYI: Volvo didn't buy out OMC in entirely. They only bought the "joint venture" new engine OEM side of the business.

OMC/BRP retains the parts and accessories, and even still uses some most of the same suppliers as the joint venture. In other words, the parts are available from either a BRP dealer or a Volvo dealer. (I know this because I am both)

Now, back to the question.

The 3.0L couplers are the same from 1986-1989
From 1990 on the 3.0l couplers are the same as Volvo's.

The pre-1990 3.0L coupler also fits the 7.4L and the 8.2L (oddly enough) but not the "small block"

Try to buy a coupler from BRP
