Hello all,
Seems to be alot of people familiar with how to identify an older 6HP Johnson Sailmaster.
I can barely make out numbers but this is what I show:

Model: J6SL C08
Serial: 100175

Can anyone identify year on this particular motor? Also any one familiar with troubleshooting Johnsons? I get no spark on one cylinder- what should I replace first??

Thanks all!!

Jason

Your engine is a 1985 6hp Johnson. Trouble shooting.... You'll need to explain what the problem is.

Re: Older Johnson ID needed / troubleshooting ??

Hi Joe...Thanks for the age info.
My problem is...Im not getting spark on one of the two cylinders. Being new to outboards , my natural option is to start replacing parts until I solve the problem. From what Ive gathered so far, There is a small plastic housing that each spark plug wire connects to so no main distributor.
From the housing appears to run two sets of small wires to a black box on the other side fo the motor. I I would venture to guess one of these two black housings is responsible for the electric generation for the spark plugs.
As one plug gets spark, should I try replacing the housing that the non-firing plug runs to???
Also, any good recommendations for a good Johnson outboard book or manual--- I need to read, study, learn, absorb as much info as possible.

Thanks Again!!

Jason
