What are you folks using for oil filters? I was reading through the manual on the weekend and note that MerCruiser says NOT to use automotive filters. Do you all buy filters from Mercury?

This relates to an old 165 HP inline 6.

Re: Oil filter?

Been using AC/Delco filters for the last 15 years, work great, no troubles.

I can see where this is going.....

It will simply turn into a "Here's what I use and I've never had a problem"

Bottom line. (just like what kind of oil should I use?)

Change your oil & filter once a year right before you "winterize". Use whatever you want.

Engines fail from LACK of maintenance (NO maintenance) not by using Brand-X oil and filters!!

Somebody................... PLEASE LOCK THIS THREAD before it goes viral!!!

Ayuh,... I buy all my filters at Napa,...
They're rebadged Wix filters, which are some of the Best you can buy...

There's really No difference in Marine. vs. automotive filters...

I mostly agree with you, but the OP was asking about a specific statement in his Mercruiser manual that said NOT to use automotive filters & I believe s/he was wondering why. The answer to that question seems to be that Mercruiser's statement in the manual was false and that any quality filter will do just fine.

Re: Oil filter?

I buy Merc filters, becuase I'm already there buying everything else at the local merc shop. I get my engine oil, lower unit lube, oil filter and fuel filter one stop.

Of couse mercury is going to only recommend their brand. There are several reasons. One is that they specificed the standards, and know they are fit for the purpose. They don't know that about other brands. They also make money on the stuff, as do their dealers.

No different than Honda, GM, Ford, Toyota, etc... They all recommend their own stuff.

Laws protect us from them voiding warranties if equavilant parts are used.

Re: Oil filter?

What the manual says is "The double filter or "filter within a filter" (made for automotive use) SHOULD NOT not be used on Mercruisers."

Maybe they were referring to some oddball oil filter rather than the normal auto spin on filters. When I initially read it, I thought they were talking about your "run of the mill, spin on oil filter" but pehaps not.

Re: Oil filter?

Typically you'd use some type of cross reference to figure out which filters are equivalent to each other. I'd personally never use a filter that wasn't cross referenced to the factory one. I don't know enough about them, but I'm of the opinion that just because a filter threads on and appears to fit doesn't mean it's okay to use.
