Re: nut under pillow block

Hi rcupp
The manual states "Remove the steering shaft lock nut". "DISCARD THE NUT". Sounds easy enough, ya? Apparently this rascal is a staked nut. Installation states " Install the lower mount bracket and a new locking nut with its unstaked side facing the mount bracket. aline the bracket with the steering arm and tourque to 130-150 ft.lbs." With that kind of torque and maybe a little corrosion this could be a challenge. This info is from an OEM manual by the way. They are using a large breaker bar and socket. An impact gun may be easier. I hope this helps.

Hi Rcupp
Bud, you going to have to be way more detailed in what your asking. Where are you at in this project? What are you trying to repair? Ya gotta write us a picture of the situation, we can't see much from this end.

i dont know if you should remove that nut until you have removed all the weight.
to service the bracket the book says-
1> remove powerhead
2> remove gearcase
3> remove exhaust housing
4> remove boats steering system as required.
i would also remove the tilt and trim so its not damaged.

Rcupp..... The engine shakes bad due to the splines being stripped at either the lower m/mt bracket or the steering shaft (or both). And of course the large nut that you're refering to is what retains those items.

To remove and replace the nut, you must remove the upper and lower motor mount bolts, then back the entire engine away from the swivel bracket assy.

Rcupp.... Yes, the lower unit must be removed first as the shift rod runs right up through the steering shaft. And unless you have a couple friends who are awfully strong, yep, you'll need a hoist of some kind to lift that engine up and out of the swivel bracket.
