Have a 80hp Mercury which I believe to be a 1985, perhaps someone could confirm this. Serial 5582938. I just got this boat and engine and it seems to be not charging, actually I'm quite sure of it. Does anyone know what might be the most common problem and where should I start looking? Thanks for the help.

Darryl

Re: Not charging

Most common is the regulator/rectifier (depends if you have one or both). My bet is you just have the rectifier. Check to make sure you have AC voltage comming out of the stator (two yellow wires)if so... Check for 12 volts DC comming out of the rectifier. If not replace the rectifier.

Yours could look like this.

Book shows yours as a 1980/81 model.

No AC on the yellow wires while the engine is running? Time for a stator replacement.
Here is one of the cheapest places I know of.web page

Re: Not charging

Well, there might be some AC there but I couldn't read it as it drove my digital meter crazy jumping around wildly. I checked the web page that you provided and don't see it listed if it is indeed a 80 or 81.

Darryl
