Northern Pike and Walleye Fisherman, Question!

My son, age 10, wants to know the lures, live bait, and techniques of how to catch these critters. We fish mainly in resivours, and sometimes the 3 rivers here in the Pittsburgh area. We usually go for the Lg. Mouth and do pretty good. So be careful of what you say...the posts will be printed out, laminated, and installed on the boat permanently. Thanks, Karl Jr.

Sounds like your son needs a few fishing books to keep him busy on rainy days.

Start with the basics.
Jig and minnow.
Crankbaits--Rapalas, floating, suspending, Rattlin Rapalas
A spinner rig and minnow for trolling.
A couple of spoons, Red & White Daredevil, and Yellow 5 of Diamonds.

Cast, jig, Troll.

iv'e had little luck with walleye except in mn but for northern most of your bass stuff is good spinners and #5 mepps most important is a leader good steel or titanium if you don't use a leader ck you line and retie after each fish a mouth spreder is a good idea thay have alot of sharp teeth

I have had great luck for Northern with a Chartruese/White spinnerbait with tandem willow leaf blades. Burn over the tops of weeds just like bass fishing. Bass and Northern will take it.
Live bait: A sucker under a nice big bobber can prove worthy too.
For the 'eyes, like mentioned, a jig and minnow is tough to beat. In the spring, go light for your tackle. 6 lb test with a light jig such as a 1/32 oz. jig will work. Slow presentation is the key in spring. Summertime, work deeper areas off of points.
That should give you a start!
Dman

In my experience you can catch pike on just about anything. They are a very aggresive fish so you make sure you have strong knots and good leaders or you may lose a number of fish. As mentioned above the Mepps spinners and Daredevils work great, I've also had alot of luck with artificial minnows and Johnson Silver Minnows. Like bass you'll have better luck fishing where there is cover. If your trolling in deeper waters you might want to try a Believer as well.

Sometime back we took the kids up to Lake of the Woods in Canada. Caught all the walleye we could eat with a minnow trolling rig. There was a guy at the resort that used every lure in his box but had no luck. Don't if walleyes have regional characteristics, but they like minnows( in Chicago we called them "shiners" a BIG minnow)in Canada.

Jerry

Look for weed beds or heavy grass areas and troll on the outer edges. They usually are lurking near and usually hit because of invasion of their territory and not because they are hungry. Northerns are cousin to the grand Musky which is probably the most agressive fin I have hooked. Speed attracts them and I sometimes troll at a 3-5 MPH clip.

Now if you have Muskie in your area that is the ultimate catch. Thats when you use bigger lures, rigs and line with steel leaders. Ernies and terminators are my choice when I'm after these hogs.

Thanks gone fish'n I and II. We usually look for those weed beds and fish around them for bass. So we'll try some different lures and live baits this year. We usually used plastic worms.

Try spinner-baits for the largemouth bass. This time of the year, they hit 'em hard and often.

In Minnesota- the leech is a great live bait for the I's. I like to drift w/ a leech and a Lindy rig, or sometimes a leech down deep on a small jig head w/ a slip bobber- this helps when the I's are being finicky. Minnow's can be used if leech's aren't widely used in the area. Walleye's will go for Shad Raps if artificials are your cup o' tea. Nothern's aren't too fussy. Big spoons are effective as others have indicated. I like to use a Buzz Bait along the grass lines. Frogs or Sucker minnows w/ a large bobber is a fun way to bag 'em too.
Have Fun!
